Assam Exports 25 MT of GI-Tagged Joha Rice to UK and Italy, Boosting Global Market for Aromatic Indigenous Rice
Guwahati: Assam has taken a significant step in expanding its agricultural exports with the flag-off of 25 metric tonnes of GI-tagged Joha rice to international markets including the United Kingdom and Italy. The development is being seen as a major boost for farmers in the state and a milestone in promoting Assam’s indigenous agricultural products globally.
Assam Cabinet Minister Atul Bora described the initiative as a proud and hopeful moment for the farming community. He said the export of the state’s aromatic Joha rice, known for its distinctive fragrance and superior taste, marks an important step toward strengthening Assam’s presence in global food markets.
According to the minister, the Government of Assam has been prioritizing the promotion of agricultural exports to ensure better income opportunities for farmers. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the state government has been working to expand the international reach of locally produced crops.
The export consignment was shipped by M/s Safe Agritrade Private Limited, a registered exporter with the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, with support from the Assam Agriculture Department and APEDA.
Joha rice, an indigenous aromatic variety from Assam, received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2017, recognizing its unique qualities such as fine grain texture, rich aroma, and superior taste. Due to its distinct characteristics and growing global interest in traditional and healthy grains, the rice has gained increasing demand in both domestic and international markets.
Officials noted that this is not the first international shipment of Joha rice from Assam. Earlier, one metric tonne was exported to Vietnam, followed by two metric tonnes sent to Middle Eastern countries including Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, and Saudi Arabia.
With the latest export to Europe, Assam’s Joha rice is expected to strengthen its global market presence while maintaining international quality standards. The initiative is also expected to create new opportunities for farmers and enhance the value of indigenous agricultural products from the state.
The flag-off ceremony was attended by several senior officials, including Aruna Rajoria, Commissioner and Secretary of the Agriculture Department and Agriculture Production Commissioner; Birendra Mittal, State Project Director of the ARIAS Society; Dr. P. Uday Praveen, Director of Agriculture; Nripen Das, Director of Horticulture; along with officials from APEDA, the Agriculture Department, and representatives of M/s Safe Agritrade Private Limited.
