Historic Buddha Statue Linked to Kaptai Dam Era Preserved in Tripura

Pecharthal (Tripura): A historically significant Buddha statue, associated with the displacement caused by the construction of the Kaptai Dam in 1960, continues to stand as a powerful symbol of faith, resilience, and cultural identity. Buddhist monk and scholar Suman Tilak Bhikkhu recently visited the sacred relic and offered prayers, describing the experience as deeply moving.

"Today, I had the rare fortune of personally witnessing and paying reverence to this historic Buddha statue. After years of searching and deep curiosity, standing before the statue today filled my heart with an overwhelming sense of emotion', Bhikkhu said.

According to Bhikkhu, the statue is a living witness to the suffering and sacrifices endured by displaced communities during the dam’s construction. Despite being forced to leave their ancestral lands, community members ensured the safety of the sacred image by carrying it on their backs using a kallong (traditional carrier), refusing to abandon their religious heritage, an act that is both rare and deeply inspiring.

The Buddha statue is currently preserved at Atharmuracherra, Andharcherra, Pecharthal, at the residence of Bodhisattva Chakma, in Tripura. The site has since become a place of reverence and remembrance for the Buddhist community.

Religious leaders and community members emphasize that the statue is not merely an artifact, but a symbol of history, identity, and unbroken faith passed down through generations. Calls have also been made to document and preserve the legacy of such relics for future generations.
